Vegas Eats – Serendipity 3

I’ve always wanted to try the Frrrozen Hot Chocolate from Serendipity, as popularized in the movie Serendipity starring John Cusak and Kate Beckinsale. But New York is a far ways to go so I was delighted to see they opened one in Las Vegas at Caesars Palace. Of course it lacks the history and character of the New York store (est. 1954) but it was still pretty cute. The menu features generously portioned standard American fare (similar to Cheesecake Factory) with an emphasis on ice cream treats and fancy chocolate and coffee beverages.

I assumed they’d have a menu available online so I didn’t grab one (turns out the menu for their New York location differs slightly from the Vegas one) so I can’t remember how much everything cost. Except the Frrrozen Hot Chocolate, which I clearly remember as costing a whopping $9.75! It was really good though. It’s like a Starbucks Frappuccino but instead of coffee, it has a really rich, delicious chocolate flavor. It’s the perfect dessert to share with your date.

Hubby had a Burger with mushrooms and blue cheese, served with sweet potato fries.

I had a Blackened Ahi Salad (around $17 or so). The portion sizes were huge.

Oooh… I’m already craving the Frrrozen Hot Chocolate. The closest thing I’ve had is the frozen chocolate drink at Godiva, which is pretty good too.

FYI, there’s a take-out window too. It’s great if you want to just try the Frrrozen Hot Chocolate without waiting in line.

Japanese Sweets

One of my must-eats in Japan are the delicious pastries and cakes. Strawberry shortcake made with fresh cream is probably one of my favorites. Patisserie Kazunoli Mulata  located in Tagajyo is  the namesake bakery of French-trained chef Mr. Murata, serving fresh cakes and pastries made of the highest quality ingredients. They are most famous for their macarons (already sold out when we went), creme brulee, and kouign amman.

We picked out Strawberry Shortcake (280 Japanese yen), Chocolate Cake (280 yen), and Mont Blanc made with Japanese chestnuts (420 yen).

Also some Kouign Amman (195 yen each), a delicate, flaky, buttery, sugar-crusted French pastry.

Island Vintage Coffee

Ever since returning from Australia, I’ve missed their café scene. There are 5 cafés on every block in Brisbane, and most offer alfresco seating. Seriously, I enjoyed a latte and something sweet every single day I was there.

This afternoon I met up with a friend for coffee at Island Vintage Coffee located on the 2nd floor of the Royal Hawaiian Center. This is probably my favorite café in Honolulu. Great Kona coffee, yummy sweets, and most of all, a charming setting. Their location overlooking Kalakaua Avenue is perfect for people-spying.

Holiday Cupcakes from Cake Couture

I’m still alive! Oh my gosh, what is it about the holiday season that keeps me so busy? And I don’t even like Christmas. **Gasp** Yup, I said it. I don’t like obligatory gift giving, and I don’t like the materialism and excessive consumption that surrounds this holiday. I have everything I want and need, and I don’t need more stuff!

It’s also a tough time to try to be sugar-free with all the goodies piling up in our office from clients and vendors. For example, I broke down and had to try some of these adorable cupcakes received from a vendor.

Cupcakes from Cake Couture in holiday themed flavors: gingerbread, red velvet, chocolate, eggnog, peanut butter, and Christmas cookies (I think).

Here’s yet another franchise frozen yogurt chain, which have been popping up like mushrooms all over Hawaii.

After dinner at Tenkaippin we walked over next door to Tutti Frutti for some after dinner fro-yo. The store is tiny but they managed to squeeze in a short wall of yogurt machines and a small self-serve topping bar. They don’t have as much fresh fruit toppings s as Yogurtland, but they do have a variety of gummy “jelly” toppings that were pretty good. As for the frozen yogurt itself, I think Yogurtland’s is better.

Maui Eats – Stillwell’s Bakery & Cafe

101709 stillwells exterior

For dessert, my father-in-law (FIL) took us to Stillwell’s, his favorite bakery. He swears they have the best eclairs on the island! Stillwell’s has been around on Maui for a while (my husband remembers it from his younger days on Maui) and is a local favorite for a casual lunch of salads, sandwiches and soups. But the real stars here are the beautiful pastries and desserts temptingly displayed in the glass showcase.

I had to try their famous cream horns ($1.60 for mini, $2.55 for regular) which were filled with a delicious custard cream and dipped in milk chocolate.

And of course, those Eclairs ($3.90)  FIL raved about.

For anyone visiting Maui, I think Stillwell’s cream horns would make a great omiyage to take back home to Oahu. Stillwell’s cream horns are the new Krispy Kreme donuts!

August Girls’ Lunch

Since my girlfriend just gave birth last month, we decided to bring our monthly girls’ outing to her at her home. It was our first time seeing the baby since the hospital – she is so cute! Her beautiful eyes look just like her mommy’s.

Her husband made us these refreshing mojitos (rum optional) to kick off our lunch. He painstakingly squeezed all the limes and muddled the mint leaves before leaving us to our girl time. These days, they said a trip alone to Wal-Mart to get out of the house is a treat for these  new parents.

I made lunch:

  • Penne pasta with shrimp, broccoli and tomatoes
  • Spinach salad with cranberries and blue cheese
  • Roasted garlic sourdough bread (from Times Supermarket)

Dessert was lemon lime gelato from Milano Freezer (in Manoa Marketplace) that Er brought for us. She even bought mini waffle bowls and mochi ball toppings!
