Bentos from Nijiya Market

Today I’d like to introduce one of my favorite stops to pick up some quick inexpensive lunches on the go. Nijiya Market’s newer location on Piikoi street has a great selection of bentos, sushi and salads, with ample and easy parking (unlike the original location at Pucks Alley on University Ave). For those who have never been to Nijiya, it’s a compact Japanese grocery store with a focus on organic items. They offer fresh meats, seafood and produce, a well stocked take-out section at the entrance, and even a spacious eat-in space.

I like the take-out section because they have a great variety of bentos, in particular, mini-sized sushi, ready-made side dishes and bowls that I can pair to make my own combination lunch.

Chicken Karaage Bento ($4.99)

Haru no Chirashi Sushi (Spring Mix Chirashi Sushi – $5.99), served with organic soy sauce

Takoyaki ($3.99)

Natto Maki ($3.99)

Kobe Beef Tataki (in the meat section, served with ponzu sauce – $12.99/lb)

Price are very reasonable, with many mini dishes from $3.99 and bentos from $4.99. All bentos are refrigerated, which I personally like because it seems fresher than other places that leave them out for hours. Customers can then microwave them at home at their convenience, or in the microwave provided at the eat-in space in Nijiya.

All factors combined, I find myself returning to Nijiya often in search of a quick meal solution to a busy day.
